Return to the Amazon eBook

Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society (OFS) announces the launch of Return to the Amazon, an ebook for the iPad®, that invites readers aboard OFS’s Ariaú Açu ship on its epic voyage to the heart of the Amazon jungle.

“Amazonia is at our mercy... Will we approach its marvels with a sense of power or a sense of wonder?” That is the question Jacques-Yves Cousteau asked after he explored this fabled region with his son Jean-Michel and his Calypso crew in 1982, unveiling many of its mysteries for the first time. Twenty-five years later, Jean-Michel returns to the Amazon with his children, Fabien and Céline, his OFS team and some of the original Amazon expedition members to find the answer to this and other questions, entering uncharted territory and exposing secrets of a world that has been enshrouded in enigma for millennia.

“It is part homage to the memory of his father, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, part scientific expedition and documentary, and part a literary report on the trip, mixed with a human perspective on protecting the biome and a testament to its vital importance,” says Marina Silva, former Brazilian Environment Minister, who wrote the foreword to Return to the Amazon.

With more than 300 pages, hundreds of stunning images by renowned photographer Carrie Vonderhaar, exclusive photos from the personal collections of the original Cousteau team, never-before-seen expedition video footage and vivid stories, Return to the Amazon takes the reader inside tribal territory with the fearless Jaguar People, underneath murky waters with the legendary anaconda, deep into remote forest with gun-toting loggers, and just beyond the clutches of a monster dubbed simply “The Beast.” From emergency plane landings to being marooned in the middle of the Amazon River, Return to the Amazon offers readers an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at an OFS adventure while delving into serious conservation issues like only a Cousteau expedition can, unearthing intriguing discoveries and stories of hope from the remotest corners of the jungle. All to chronicle Jean-Michel’s most ambitious—and most emotional—expedition yet.

Return to the Amazon ($5.99) is available worldwide for pre-order now on iBookstore℠ and available for download on November 25.
