"Return to the Amazon": The Wealth of the Largest Tropical Rainforest on Display in Images
The Amazon is ours. Should we be approaching its wonders with a sense of power or a sense of wonder?
- Jacques Cousteau
For the first time in Brazil, a photo exhibition "Return to the Amazon," based on Jean-Michel Cousteau’s expedition, will be presented by Veolia Water Brazil. Organized by Publisher Cultura Sub and Jean-Michel Cousteau Ocean Futures Society, the photo exhibition will pass through the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Manaus between June and October 2013.
From high in the Peruvian Andes to deep in the Amazon jungle, “Return to the Amazon” photographs will retrace many of the locations visited by legendary Jacques Cousteau when he led an expedition back in 1982. Jean-Michel Cousteau and his team spent over a ten months trekking through the treacherous mountains, remote jungles and unyielding waters, hiking up to glaciers in danger of vanishing, swimming with creatures made famous by towering legends, meeting indigenous people whom the world seems to have forgotten, running into gun-toting ranchers, and witnessing nature at its most docile—and at its most rebellious. Through it all, these photographs depict how man can live harmoniously with nature and how diverse, beautiful and quirky the rainforest and its denizens truly are.
This magnificent exhibition will be unveiled on 30 screens, illustrated with photographs by Carrie Vonderhaar and will include informative panels signed by the curator, Jean Michel Cousteau himself. This exhibition’s grand opening is this Thursday June 20th in Rio de Janeiro.
This exhibition’s grand opening is at 7pm, Thursday June 20th at the Botanic Garden in Rio de Janeiro.
