Simone Cousteau, The Soul of Calypso

When I think of the amazing adventures with my father Captain, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the countless voyages, the discoveries, the inventions and the lifelong friendships, the true heroine of the adventure is Simone Cousteau, my mother. The daughter and granddaughter of French Admirals – she longed for a life at sea. The unofficial captain of Calypso. A woman in love with the sea and my father. She hid from the cameras but she spent more time on Calypso than my brother, my father and I combined. Calypso was her home. The crew were her boys. And she was the heartbeat of much of my father’s success.

Now thanks to my dear good friend, Mr. Ruben Arvizu who I have known for many years; we all get to enjoy a beautiful tribute to this amazing woman, my mother and healer, nurse and psychiatrist to the all-male crew of Calypso for 40 years.

This tribute was screened at a special occasion last December; the 2nd annual ScubaFest in Cozumel, Mexico, where a dive site was renamed on behalf of my mother, Simone Cousteau. As I dove down to 50 feet, over 100 divers witnessed me as I place a beautiful bouquet of flowers of the sea floor in honor my beautiful mother.

Cuando pienso en las aventuras increíbles con mi padre el capitán Jacques -Yves Cousteau, los innumerables viajes, los descubrimientos, los inventos y las amistades de toda la vida, la verdadera heroína de la aventura es Simone Cousteau, mi madre. La hija y nieta de almirantes franceses - que anhelaba una vida en el mar. El capitán no oficial del Calypso. Una mujer enamorada del mar y de mi padre. Ella rehuía las cámaras, pero pasó más tiempo en el Calypso que mi hermano, mi padre y yo juntos. El Calypso fue su hogar. Los tripulantes fueron como sus hijos. Y ella fue el motor e impulsora de gran parte del éxito de mi padre.

Ahora, gracias a mi muy buen amigo, el Sr. Rubén Arvizu a quien conozco desde hace muchos años; todos podemos disfrutar de este hermoso homenaje a una mujer increíble, mi madre y cuidadora, enfermera y psiquiatra durante 40 años de la tripulación del Calypso –toda ella masculina.

Este homenaje se proyectó en una ocasión especial en diciembre pasado, durante el Segundo ScubaFest anual en Cozumel, México. En esa bella isla, un sitio de buceo ha sido rebautizado con el nombre de mi madre, Simone Cousteau. Cuando me sumergí a más de 25 metros, más de 100 buzos atestiguaron el momento en que coloqué un bello ramo de flores en el fondo del mar en honor a mi hermosa madre.
