More Than 100 Scientists Stand Together for the Gulf of California

October 1, 2026

Ocean Futures Society is proud to share an important new statement from more than 100 Mexican and international marine and conservation scientists calling for the protection of the Gulf of California from proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) development.

Often called the “Aquarium of the World” by my father, Jacques Cousteau, the Gulf of California is one of our planet’s most extraordinary marine environments. Its remarkable waters support whales, dolphins, sea turtles, whale sharks, countless fish species and coastal communities that have depended upon this living ecosystem for generations. The scientists’ statement warns that proposed LNG development poses a “direct, existential, and unacceptable risk” to the Gulf’s internationally recognized biodiversity and habitat.

Ocean Futures Society and I are deeply appreciative of Joel Reynolds’ leadership and the continued efforts of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), along with the many scientists, organizations and colleagues who have come together to protect this vital marine environment.

It is encouraging to see so many knowledgeable and respected voices united on behalf of the Gulf of California. Science must continue to guide our understanding of what is at stake and inspire action to protect the ocean that sustains us all.

We encourage our Ocean Futures Society friends and colleagues around the world to read Joel Reynolds’ latest NRDC blog and the scientists’ statement, available in both English and Spanish, and to share them widely with your own friends, organizations and communities.

The more people who understand what is at stake, the greater our collective ability to make a difference.

With gratitude and urgency,
