Protecting the Gulf of California: Why Liquid Natural Gas Has No Place in Our Ocean Legacy
Dear Friends and Ocean Lovers,
I’m writing to remind you of my opposition to a proposed liquid natural gas project in the Gulf of California. The project proposed by Mexico Pacific would bring a 48’ pipeline from Texas to the Gulf of Mexico to deliver liquid natural gas to a new processing facility that would be one of the largest in North America. After the liquid natural gas is processed, it would be loaded onto supertankers where it would traverse the Gulf of California hundreds of times per year on its way to be sold to countries in Asia. Can you imagine liquid natural gas facilities and super tankers in the Gulf?
I fell in love with the Gulf of California during our expeditions there in 1986. The Gulf is such a beautiful place and its home to many species of whales and dolphins, seals and sea lions, as well as turtles, fish and coral reefs. Many communities in the Gulf rely on the ocean for the quality of their lives. Processing and transporting liquid natural gas will degrade the air and water quality in the region, it will create noise pollution, it could kill whales due to ship strikes, and there is always the risk of tragic accidents.
If you want to learn more about this project you can find the project website here.
If you want to share your opposition you can sign a petition here: Petition against LNG in the Gulf of California.
Please consider sharing my new video against liquid natural gas to your friends and colleagues.
The decision to stop this project may be beyond our control, but I cannot sit idly by as this clearly destructive project is proposed anywhere on the planet, let alone in an ocean treasure like the Gulf of California. We need to invest in clean energy to reduce the effects of climate change – not create new sources of fossil-fuel based energy for people on the other side of the planet.
Thank you for your interest and support!
