Please Don't Interact with Curious Beluga Whales in the Ocean
After the largest return of illegally captured orcas and belugas to the ocean off Russia was completed during 2019, there are recent reports that some belugas are interacting with humans in the area near Vladivostok Harbor where the whales were released. Local observers are assuming that these whales are members of that previously captive group.
Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society and The Whale Sanctuary Project produced this public service announcement to help people understand that we need to minimize our contact with these wild belugas to help protect them and keep them wild in their natural environment. Staying away from the belugas is important for the safety of people and the whales. Belugas that interact with humans and watercraft can develop habits that can lead to injury and poor health.
Let's help belugas stay natural and wild!
