Jean-Michel Cousteau loves beluga whales!

May 22, 2019

Beluga whales are highly intelligent cetaceans that live in cold, northern oceans. They communicate with each other and their mothers pass on information to their children. Each pod may have a different culture based on behaviors that they learn from one another, such as teaching each other the locations where they migrate each year.

While our primary sense is vision, they live in a world of sounds.

Belugas are one of the most vocal cetacean species and some people call them the canaries of the sea because of their beautiful songs. They also echolocate, emitting rapid strings of clicking sounds into the environment to help understand their surroundings. In captivity, belugas cannot fully utilize their echolocation in a concrete pool. Imagine being placed in jail with blindfolds.

It is my moral commitment and greatest pleasure to share our expedition films globally so everyone can experience the ocean and it’s inhabitants in the wild. It is vitally important for whales and dolphins to roam the vast ocean. Marine mammals are extremely intelligent and sophisticated, socially and behaviorally complex. This is why I am against holding cetaceans, whales and dolphins, captive in concrete tanks for entertainment and profit.

The time has come to view the captivity of cetaceans as part of our past, not a tragic part of our future. We must globally ban trafficking and breeding of whales and dolphins for theme parks where they suffer and die lonely deaths.

Captive whales and dolphins can and should be relocated to whale sanctuaries where they can live out their lives in ocean habitats. For more information about whale sanctuaries please visit Whale Sanctuary Project.

Lets work together for the protection of beluga whales and their arctic environments. They belong in the ocean not in captivity. They are a vital part of the ocean that we depend upon for the quality of our lives.

Protect The Ocean And You Protect Yourself.

Warm Regards,
