Washington, D.C. - In a bold move that will have a lasting effect on marine life, President George W. Bush has assured his legacy in terms of preserving large portions of the ocean for future generations. Jean-Michel Cousteau was among the invited guests at a White House ceremony where the President announced his declaration of new Marine National Monuments.

This announcement follows Bush’s 2006 designation of the Northwest Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument, which preserved 138,000 square miles of ocean.

Defying Ocean's End Offers Global Perspective on Eve of Pew Report

Los Cabos, Mexico - For the first time ever, the world's largest environmental organizations, working with scientists, the business community and international governments, met specifically to develop a comprehensive and achievable agenda to reverse the decline in health of the world's ocean.

The five-day Defying Ocean's End (DOE) conference marked the launch of a new, science-based international effort to restore and maintain the health of marine systems. The gathering resulted in several preliminary recommendations:

Jean-Michel Cousteau, on behalf of the entire Ocean Futures Society family, applauded the life and work of Frank Scalli upon learning of his recent death at the age of 73.

“Frank was a close personal friend and we are all saddened to hear of his passing,” Cousteau said. “However, his influence and legendary work on behalf of the dive industry will live on forever.”

Cousteau recalled that he and Scalli were both inducted in the DEMA Hall of Fame.
