The Ocean Futures Society expedition team underwent semi closed-circuit rebreather
training during April 2003. The team traveled aboard the Peace, a live-aboard dive boat
based in the Ventura Harbor in Southern California. Dive training took place off Catalina
and Santa Cruz Islands.
The focus of the training was to prepare the expedition team for Ocean Futures' upcoming
film expedition in July to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. The team practiced working
together on above and below-water communication techniques. They also tested and trained
with custom HMI lighting systems. The divers were also able to familiarize themselves with
the JMC Super Mask, which is well suited for use with semi closed-circuit rebreather
systems.

This year's JASON XIV: From Shore to Sea engaged students and teachers in an
exciting journey where they explored the unique Channel Islands region of California. This
area includes the Channel Islands National Park, the waters of the Channel Islands National
Marine Sanctuary and the densely populated California coastline, which served as a "living
laboratory" for studying nature's dynamic systems. Jean-Michel Cousteau was featured as a
guest host during live, on-line broadcasts on diving history and technology to thousands of
students around the world. The JASON Project is the brainchild of Dr. Robert Ballard, a
National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and a colleague of Mr. Cousteau's.
